Xiaomi Red-mi Note 3 Nougat update: Android 7.1.1 build found under testing
Update [January 27, 2017]: Xiaomi could soon release the Nougat update for Redmi Note 3, as we just spotted the device running Android 7.1.1 build. That’s a bit odd too, admittedly, as we expect the Chinese OEM to rollout 7.0 build first, because all Xiaomi Nougat update under testing right now — Mi4c, Mi4 and Mi Note Pro — are 7.0 builds, but we can’t rule out the possibility of 7.1.1 either. The device was caught on GFXbench running Android 7.1.1 build, and we believe its real too, as the software is marked as Android Xiaomi edition, as the fake ones come with mention of custom ROM like CyanogenMod, now Lineage OS.
Original article: Well, the spectacular Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is yet to receive even the Marshmallow update, and that tells a lot about Xiaomi’s ability — or lack thereof — the update its most popular Android phones on time. Although the Redmi Note 3 received a big update recently in MIUI 8, it still runs on Android 5.1.1, which is so sad, especially when we are to write this on a day when we believe the world will see the launch of Android 7.0 Nougat.
So, given the wild delay on Marshmallow, how do we start thinking about the Android Nougat for Redmi Note 3. Well, we have to, because we love Note 3, and we love Nougat update, and we would like the latter to run on former, not only to see Note 3 get what it deserves, but also to keep our faith in the admittedly broken system Android OS updates.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Nougat update release
Expected release date: August 2017.
We expect the Xiaomi to correct its failings with Redmi Note 3’s update with the quick launch of Marshmallow. It’s been pending for a long time without doubt, but we’re seeing development on this — the special edition runs on 6.0 now for example — and before mid-September, the Redmi Note 3 users should be running Android 6.0.1 on their device.
And because updates will quicker-ever-than-before with Nougat for multiple reasons — see next section, where we’re talking about this in details — we think we won’t have to wait this time of year 2017 for Nougat, at all, for Redmi Note 3.
In fact, we would guess Q2 release for Android Nougat for Redmi Note 3. And if you ask for a month, then we’ll go for august 2017, as mentioned above.
Although, much would depend on when Xiaomi’s other devices — higher up the order to receive Nougat treatment — like Redmi 5 receive the Android 7.0 update. If Redmi 5 is running on Nougat by the end of this year, then we see no problem as to why Redmi Note 3 won’t be rocking Android Nougat update before the end of august2017, or Q2 2017.
Why the Nougat update won’t suffer same fate as Marshmallow (it will be quicker)
As we have talked about hundred times before, the Nougat update should trump all other Android OS updates so far in release timing. We expect the delay to be far lesser with Nougat than it has even been before. Because, Google is trying its best to make a platform for quicker updates with Nougat.
Take this for example, Google has already shared Nougat’s code with major OEM partners for long, which is why we saw the Huawei P9’s 7.0 leak already, even while we wait for official Nougat OTA for Nexus devices. This was simply unthinkable stuff in the pre-Nougat era!
Moreover, LG is promising, and looking forward to launch Nougat pre-installed device with its V20, which will be Android-world’s first too, because it’s the honor of new Nexus devices of the year to bring us new Android OS version each year. Or at least it was, as things stand now thanks to V20. And you know what, even small section of LG G5 users in Korea have the Nougat update ready for them.
All things point out to OEMs developing the Nougat update was earlier then they usually do, so we have good time thinking Xiaomi would be able to deliver quicker updates this time around, and thus we could see Xiaomi’s devices running Android 7.0 soon — although, soon would mean more than few months given Xiaomi’s update performance so far, even though the same word would mean not more than a couple of months for the likes of Motorola, LG, etc.
What to expect in Redmi Note 3 Nougat update?
Well, you get Android 7.0. And lots of new stuff. Like, all new notification shade, feature-rich notifications, refined-than-ever Settings that really talk out each menu to you (things are explained a lot better in Settings), and improvements to Marshmallow’s Doze mode to get you even better mix of battery life and notifications.
Check out the video below from YouTube Tim Schofield (Qbking77) to get good idea of what and what is new in Android Nougat, although ignore the stock Android UI running the show in the video, because unlike Nexus devices, you will have to make do with Xiaomi’s MIUI, which would totally change the user interface on Redmi Note 3 — like it or not!
Why the delay with Redmi Note 3 updates?
It’s natural of you to ask why so much delay with Redmi Note 3’s Marshmallow update, that we’re still waiting for it when we’re entering the world of Marshmallow’s follow-up, Android Nougat. Well, it’s down in most part to Xiaomi’s custom skin, called MIUI.
Sure, the MIUI works out good, looks even better and features great UI innovation and animations, but when it causes so much struggles to Xiaomi, resulting into super-dull and drastic delay in major Android OS updates, is it really worth it?
Wouldn’t you want a simple UI customization as featured on HTC’s devices, beginning with HTC 10 especially, and quicker updates. Or even better, look at Motorola’s Android phones, and the quick updates they get — this shouldn’t change with Nougat either — and you might want to think hard about whether Xiaomi should persist with detailed UI changes in MIUI, or get its act together and be sober with custom skin, at least like HTC, if not like Samsung (which has trimmed its UI a lot, too), or Motorola (no custom skin, but just some great useful apps added, which don’t look surplus to what Android already offers).
